Beth was born April 21, 1923 in Plant City, Florida. She was the daughter of the late Robert M. and Shelley Smith Morgan. A graduate of Berea College, she dedicated her life to the service of people through missionary work, church leadership and classroom teaching.
Beth with her husband Hunter, served the United Methodist Church in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) for over 17 years. On returning to the States, she became a school teacher in Dumont, New Jersey. Retirement moved Beth and Hunter to Florida and then later the mountains of North Carolina where she continued her service. Her life and commitment to Christ was through the Rukwadzano of Zimbabwe and United Methodist Women. Beth was strengthened by and cherished her membership at Asbury United Methodist Church in Asheville.
Beth was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Hunter Griffin, and brothers, John and Robert Morgan. She is survived by daughters, Peggy Griffin-Jackman (Ron), Nancy Robinson (Kip), Joanna Griffin (Dawn), Sandra Wilson (Wayne); ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; the nieces and nephews of the Washburn family; and dearest friend, Elaine Poovey.
A memorial celebrating Beth’s life will be held 4:00 PM, Saturday, May 3, in the chapel of Brooks-Howell Home. Visitation with the family will begin at 3:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lakeside UMC for Sierra Leone Mission Work, which honors Beth in supporting her daughter, Nancy, who continues the work in Africa that was begun by her parents.
