Edna W. Hudson, 91, of Winter Haven, Fla., passed away on May 24, 2014 in Winter Haven. Edna was born September 2, 1922, in Pardee, Va. She graduated from Beaver High School in Bluefield, Va. in 1941. She worked her way through college by teaching swimming and lifesaving courses. She went to Milligan College from 1941 to 1943, and then transferred to Radford College where she graduated with a B.S. in Education in 1945. She received her Master’s degree from Rollins College in 1972, and was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, an honor society in education. Edna was teaching school in Saltville, Va., when she met and married the love of her life, Early J. Hudson in 1948. They moved to Baltimore, Md. where Early worked for Martin-Marietta and they started their family. He transferred to the Orlando, Fla. Division in 1956 and they settled in Winter Park, Fla., where they raised their four daughters and their first granddaughter. While in Winter Park she taught at several Orange County public schools. She finished her career at Aloma Baptist Church where she taught kindergarten and set up the Head Start Program. She was active in the church and her faith was a comfort and a joy for her. She loved playing the piano and organ, swimming and being outside and spending time with her family. In 1983, Early retired from Martin-Marietta and they moved to their beloved mountains in Franklin, N.C. They were blessed with thirty happy and healthy years of retirement. In 2011 they moved back to Winter Haven, Fla., to be near family. Edna was preceded in death by Early in February 2014 and they were blessed to have 66 years together. She is survived by her daughters, Nancy Akers, Lynn Stylc (Anthony), Valerie Rees (Loren), Mary Ann Drapp (Robert); granddaughters, Vanessa Gotz and Leslie Stylc; great-granddaughters, Kathryn and Nathalie Gotz. The family received friends from 9 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at the funeral home. Funeral service was held 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at Sun City Center Funeral Home, 1851 Rickenbacker Drive, Sun City Center, Fla. Internment was held at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla. Arrangements by Sun City Center Funeral Home, (813) 634-9900.
